Fashion show raises funds for church

Fashionable cause: Philippa Burke boosts engagement at St Anne’s

Four years ago Philippa Burke came up with an interesting way to raise funds and boost engagement at St Anne’s.

The 72-year-old’s fashion extravaganza proved a real hit for the Anglican church in 2013. Tickets for a second show last Sunday, sold out a week in advance.

“I know Bermudians like fashion,” Ms Burke said. “But my event wasn’t just about fashion. It was about showcasing some of the talents of our young people.

“The fashion show was just one part of it. While the models changed their outfits in between sets, we had people from across the island sharing their God-given gifts. We had someone at the opening who sang the Lord’s prayer and a young man on the saxophone, who came on and almost brought the house down with his talent.”

The success reminded Ms Burke of a simple truth: we can all make a positive contribution to God’s kingdom.

“To me, being a Christian is all about serving. And in this case, I’m able to do something good for my church,” she said.

“When I heard the expenses of the church exceeded the income, and seeing that the population of the congregation isn’t getting any bigger, I decided to get involved. Some members of our church are retired and aren’t able to give as much as they used to but we can still find creative ways to raise revenue and make it something that’s pleasing to God.”

She had lots of help. From singer Myrna Outerbridge; poetry reader Andrea Peets; 12-year-old violinist Faven Brewster and steel pan drummers Laree Talbot and Paul Smith.

Designers graced the catwalk in their own collections; African-inspired clothing was provided by Marcia Stowe, owner of Hamilton retailer Modestique.

“The event was very successful and it just goes to show that when you trust in God and follow the teachings of the Bible and rely on the Holy Spirit to direct you, then things will work in your favour,” Ms Burke said.

“A lot of people who know me came out, and after hearing this was something for my church they were so generous in their giving and support for me.

“I felt honoured they trusted me to deliver something of high calibre and the amount of calls and e-mails I’ve received from people saying it was a lovely time, that they really
