US social activist preacher to appear in events on island

Social justice focus: Rev Dr Jacqui Lewis

The Reverend Jacqui Lewis, PhD, an author, preacher and activist in the United States, will visit Bermuda for four events over the course of next weekend.

Dr Lewis is the Senior Minister for Public Theology and Transformation at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City and in her public appearances on the island, she will focus on the topic of racial and social justice.

Her desire is to help create an antiracist, just, fully welcoming society in which everyone has enough and where everyone is equal.

Believing faith communities can lead the way to racial reconciliation, Dr Lewis cofounded The Middle Project and The Revolutionary Love Conference with her spouse, the Rev John Janka. The organisation trains leaders to create a more just society.

The public is invited to register for the following events:

Friday, October 21: Youth Q & A Café, Bermuda National Library, 6:30-8:30pm: In a relaxed atmosphere youth aged 13 and over can share their questions with Dr Lewis about Social & Racial Justice. Pizza and refreshments will be served and Scars-qualified supervisors will be present. To book a place contact: bdasocialjustice@gmail.com

Saturday, October 22: “Racial Justice and Ubuntu”, in association with Curb, at the Bermuda National Gallery, 9.30am to 11am. Dr Lewis will talk about her passion for Racial Justice and equality in our world. She will share the Zulu concept of Ubuntu, which is often translated as “I am here because we are” or “I am because you are.” A continental breakfast will be available from 9:30am until Dr Lewis speaks at 10am. (Donations will be appreciated) There is a limit of 100 places, so please register by e-mail at bermuda22oct@gmail.com

Saturday, October 22: “Race & Sexuality and how they Intersect with Religion/Christianity”, Bermuda National Gallery, 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails at 5:30pm to the sounds of Robert Symons on the steel pan and then enjoy a three-course meal and entertainment before Dr Lewis challenges us with how our race and our sexuality interact with our faith as we journey through life together. This is a ticketed event through PTIX at https://www.ptix.bm/ There are two tiers of tickets: patrons $200, regular tickets $100 and only 100 tickets are available.

Sunday, October 23: Community Church Service at 11am at Wesley Methodist Church, 41 Church Street, Hamilton, a vibrant service featuring the music of Joy. T. Barnum and Rajai Denbrook. Dr Lewis will bring the message as we share together in God’s love. There is no need to register, and all are welcome!

Dr Lewis has appeared on: the The Today Show, All In with Chris Hayes, AM Joy, ABC, NBC, PBS, CBS, WPIX, and on the History Channel series, The Bible Rules. Dr Lewis created two US television programmes: Just Faith, on MSNBC.com, and Chapter and Verse on PBS. Dr Lewis’s work has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times and other publications.

Dr. Lewis’s books include: Fierce Love: A Bold Path to Ferocious Courage and Rule-Breaking Kindness That Can Heal the World, Ten Essential Strategies for Becoming a Multiracial Congregation, The Power of Stories, Guide for Leaders in Multi-racial, Multi-cultural Congregations, and the children’s book, You Are So Wonderful! a rhyming celebration of diversity.
