Heartened by compassion shown towards Palestinians

Peaceful past: before the troubles that began in the 20th century, Muslims and Jews had coexisted in harmony and mutual respect for centuries

My faith has been restored in the compassion of humanity with the events that have taken place over the past week to show the support for the people of Palestine – both in Bermuda and throughout the world.

Regardless of religion or creed, we are all members of the human race and family, connected by more commonalities than differences. This show of compassion and support demonstrates that empathy and caring is alive and well.

We seem to have recognised that we are created by one creator, we are family and we need to support each other and stand up for what is right and speak against what is wrong.

It is absolutely certain that history, as taught to us in the past and still up to this day, has not been entirely factual; rather it’s been “his story”.

I grew up thinking the Indians, as they were incorrectly called, were the bad guys and the cowboys were the good guys when it turned out the truth was entirely different. The Indians, the First Nations and Indigenous people of North America, were purely defending what was being taken away from them by the so-called good guys. No further explanation is needed. Just like the current situation happening in Gaza.

In my younger days I was made to think the Palestinians were crazy, fanatical terrorists throwing stones at the innocent Israelis. It was much later that I realised the real situation; more recently the whole and absolute truth is being unravelled.

The Palestinians have, for over 75 years, been defending their human rights. They have been and continue to be displaced, imprisoned, starved, denied basic human needs and massacred. Yet they are labelled “terrorists”.

There is so much more to this story, which I urge you to research not through the conventional “his story” books; you will be enlightened and your heart and mind guided to the right and empathetic truth.

My faith keeps me hopeful that justice will prevail to all those suffering atrocities of injustice. Allah, the Merciful, says in his Noble Book: “Allah! There is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He fully knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them but no one can grasp any of His knowledge – except what He wills to reveal. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.”

The above aayat resonates with me profoundly, assuring that the Most High sees and knows what is going on and His intervention is sure and guaranteed.

Though these may seem like the days of darkness, they are simultaneously, the days of enlightenment. The world, and indeed Bermuda, sees further than this war is depicted – not as one of differences in religion but rather as one of humanity.

The true history is that Muslims welcomed the Jews when they were exiled in the early 1900s from many other countries. For centuries, they coexisted in harmony and mutual respect with the Palestinians. Then along came the disruptive elements that caused mischief in the land and hence the horrendous and inhumane consequences we see today.

The irony of it all is that what is happening is against international law, yet the tyranny continues without opposition from the powers that be; the ones who wrote the rules and laws. However, there is a new day dawning – one of hope and justice as Allah has promised and Allah’s promise is true.

Surely we must continue to stand up for justice. Let our voices continue to raise and shout for justice and immediate ceasefire of the bombardment of Palestine. May we be reminded that “peace is the only battle worth waging”. (Albert Camus)

May Allah who is also known as Al-Sami, hearer of everything, hear our duaas. We pray for strength, protection, patience, peace for ourselves and for all of humanity. May the Almighty Al-Aziz have His mercy upon us all.

Bermuda, have a blessed week. Remember the struggle continues until justice for all reigns. As salaam alaikum (Peace be unto you).
