Promoting faith, food and good health
Refressh Health and Wellness Ministry, which has been helping clients to rejuvenate for eight years, will celebrate its first anniversary at its St George’s location in April.
Kendra-Lee Pearman, PhD, ND, is a health and wellness educator and coach behind the ministry. Having started out with a 30-day programme in 2016, she launched the Refressh brand the following year.
“Refressh is an acronym representing the eight laws of health,” Dr Pearman said. “It stands for relationship with God, eating healthy, fresh air, rest, exercise, sunlight, self-control, and H20 (water). So, Refressh Health and Wellness is a ministry that God has given me.
She said that she and her daughter initially came up with the name “Refresh”, but then she added the second “s” to differentiate it.
At the time, Dr Pearman had already earned a PhD and was a certified nutrition counsellor; however, that was not the final destination for her. With no desire to return to school, but desiring to further her education in natural medicine, she let her faith dictate her next steps.
“I believe God gave me the acronym of ‘Refressh’,” Dr Pearman said. “I had the sense from outside myself to go and finish the Doctor of Naturopathy because I had done the Certified Nutritional Counselling course.
“Still, I wasn’t going to do another doctorate because I already had a PhD, but I was impressed that I needed the Doctor of Naturopathy. But He opened the doors for me to do this, the time to do it, the money to do it.
“I was a full-time student, and I had resigned from where I was working. I came home to take care of my mum, who was terminally ill. I said to myself, ‘What am I going to do?’ That’s when I started to work on completing the degree.
“So I felt the impression of God to do this. I received a call from one of my clients who had done the 30-day programme many times. She had a friend who had some serious health condition. She came to me, and we had an amazing one-to-one.
“She wasn’t sure, and I wasn’t sure, but I said to God, if you want me to finish this degree and start working with clients individually, let her sign up with me. And she did; she wanted to work with me from a naturopathic perspective, so my prayer to God was, if this is the road you want me to take, you got to show me, and that’s what He did. He showed me through her coming to work with me.”
Dr Pearman completed her ND of Naturopathy in Original Medicine at the International Institute of Original Medicine.
When asked how she hopes her business impacts the community, she said: “Coming from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective, we have a health message that promotes whole plant foods and uses the eight fundamental laws of health, which we believe come from God.
“My whole mission is to help people discover their bodies can heal from whatever it is if they follow the eight laws of health having a trusting relationship with a higher power.
“I don’t tell people who they should believe in; my faith is in God. I’m a Christian. I’ve had clients of different faiths and denominations who believe in a higher power. I believe that by practising the eight laws of health, in that way people can have a lifestyle change, their bodies can heal.
“Most of my clients will say it is the spiritual element that is different from other programmes they may go to, in addition to the coaching I offer.”
She added: “If I can help people learn how to detox their bodies and change their lifestyles and eating habits, that can help their bodies to heal and get off medication, they can become their own doctor per se, in the sense of being in tune with who they are and what their bodies need.
“If my legacy could be that she showed me how to regain my health, detox my body, lose weight, and transition into a state of health and wellness, that would be worth it to me.”
Any moment is a good moment to pursue a healthier life journey. Dr Pearman is eager and ready to serve those looking to take that step. She said she did not consider herself as promoting a diet.
“I consider myself a ministry of health and wellness,” she said. “What I do know is that it works. If you want to transform your health, be it you want to detox your body, lose weight, or cure illnesses that you may have, I know what I do works as long as you follow it.
“But God is the ultimate healer; He is Jehovah Rafa. He is the one who heals. I consider myself his servant, and one He is using in Bermuda to help people with this.”
Dr Pearman closed with the message: “It’s never too late to start making changes in your health – incremental changes, you don’t have to do anything drastic. I first tell everyone to make sure you are drinking your water.
“A lot of the issues we have can be traced right back to dehydration. About 50 per cent of your body weight is water, and no one should drink more than 100 ounces daily.
“So my advice and encouragement would be, it is never too late to decide to change your health and wellness.”
