Touch rugby's for girls, real women hit each other
Fed up with an endless diet of touch rugby some of the Island's women have decided to revive the full contact side.A team has existed in the past, and took part in the Caribbean 7s in 2008, as well playing in the Las Vegas Midnight 7s event.More recently two members of the 2008 squad, Anna Knapman-Scott and Melissa DaPonte, played for a Caribbean Select XV in the Bahamas.Other than this however opportunities to play the full contact version of the game are almost non-existent for the Island's women, and that's something that Knapman-Scott is keen to change.“A group of us decided that it was a shame that the programme had fallen out of practice and we wanted to revive it,” she said. “We think it would be beneficial to get a programme up and running and have a squad in training to both compete overseas and to invite overseas teams to play us here.“Rugby is quite well subscribed throughout the Caribbean and is big in US and Canada so there are lots of opportunities available. Women's touch rugby allows for six a side which really limits the amount of play time people can get, whereas a full contact team can field XV which allows more people the chance to play.“We're looking to get a XVs squad together this time which gives the opportunity to break down into tens and sevens if the occasion calls for it.”For anyone who is interested in finding out more about the women's contact programme there will be an information session at 2pm at the National Sports Centre on Sunday following the women's Hurdle Memorial game. Everybody is welcome, Bermudian and non-Bermudian, and experience isn't necessary. If you can't make that meeting, contact the women's rugby programme at wcr.bda[AT]gmail.com for more details.
