Stay focused, urges coach Bird
Bermuda coach Lawrence Bird has urged his players to remain focused ahead of today’s NACRA Caribbean Championship final against Guyana at the National Sports Centre. The Islanders, who topped their North Zone group, are favourites to defend the crown they won 12 months ago when they defeated Guyana in their own back yard.Bird admits the past year has been a “long, hard slog” for his side but he is calling for them to dig deep one more time and complete the defence of their title.“It’s been a long, hard slog, as we’ve been training three-times a week now for almost three months,” said Bird.“We just need to keep the guys focused on the prize. We’ve had a long year of rugby and we just need to get through 80 more minutes of rugby and then we can relax.”The winner of this year’s Championships will advance as the sole Caribbean representatives to the next stage of the 2015 World Cup qualifiers.Bird, however, insists he’s looking no further than the immediate task at hand.“This is a World Cup qualifier and we would go into the next round if we win, when we would play someone from South America,” he said.“We don’t want to look too far ahead but (the qualifiers) are absolutely an incentive for us. We’ve still got guys who haven’t made the squad training with us because they know there’s a bigger prize. We have to focus on this game, though, other wise we will come a cropper.”Bermuda, who are 49th in the International Rugby Board’s world rankings, are the top ranked side in the Caribbean.Kick is 4pm.
