Bermuda beaten in plate final
Bermuda fell to Mexico in the NACRA Under-19 Championships rugby plate final on Saturday, going down 18-10 in a tightly contested match.The first try of the match fell to Mexico, putting them up 5-0 after the conversion was missed.However, Bermuda hit straight back and took the lead when David Lunn dived over for a try near the posts. He then kicked the conversion to give Bermuda the lead, 7-5.Mexico went ahead just before the half-time whistle, their full back finishing off a smart passing move.Another missed conversion saw the score 10-7 in Mexico’s favour at the break.The Mexicans started the second half the same way as they ended the first with physical play up front and were helped when the Islanders made the mistake of passing the ball back into the 22 to kick for touch, allowing Mexico to inch further ahead, 15-7.The Bermuda side began to tire against their bigger opponents but reduced the deficit via a penalty by Lunn, bringing Bermuda within five points of their opponents.They then got another chance to add to the score with a penalty attempt by Lunn but his effort fell just short from the half-way line.Mexico were awarded a penalty in front of the posts after an offside call and the kick split the uprights to make the final score 18-0.Mexico, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites, saw their title hopes dashed after losing to eventual champions Cayman Islands by two points in their opening match.Cayman beat Trinidad and Tobago 20-10 to win the tournament.
