Bermuda suffer heavy defeat
Canada 48 Bermuda 0An inexperienced Bermuda national team were crushed by Canada in the opening game of the NACRA Rugby Sevens Championships in Ottawa on Saturday.Bermuda, skippered by scrum half Tom Healy, were little match for the veteran Canada squad who took the lead early on with a try from Sean Duke.Kieran Hearn and Phil Mack added tries before the interval, the former simply splitting the defence with hard running, and the latter sneaking into the corner. Bermuda were only down 15-0 at the break, but Lawrence Bird’s side couldn’t take advantage of any offensive opportunities. The Islanders were penalised twice in the scrum, turned over their own ball, and misfired on kickoffs. Canada had size, height and experience advantage over Bermuda, who allowed the hosts to routinely steal possession on kick-offs.Canada’s first try in the second half was scored by John Moonlight. Jeff Hassler (2), Sean White and Duke scored further tries. Connor Braid slotted four conversions for the 48-0 win.
