Youngsters learned in defeat, says Bird
Lawrence Bird was satisfied with the recent NACRA Rugby Sevens Championships in Ottawa, Canada, although his team were unable to record a victory.Bermuda, the defending Caribbean Champions at 15s rugby, opened their campaign against one of the favourites Canada, losing 48-0.They then went down 30-7 to the Cayman Islands, before ending the campaign with a 17-12 defeat to Bahamas.Although Bird’s side was made up of younger players new to the smaller format of the game, Bird was pleased with both the effort and the experience the team gained.“It was a new experience for most of the boys who went on the trip, and coming against the bigger countries who have professionals that are contracted to the sport then you will always be up against it, but we performed well and it was a great learning experience for those who went,” said Bird.“It was tough tournament, but the pleasing thing is that due to the travelling we have done this year, many of our senior players couldn’t make the trip so we got the younger guys in to learn the sevens game because we usually play and are used to the 15s.“In the end it was constructive for the players to get used to this level of play and the style in which this format is played. The results weren’t what we wanted but we told the players to not be discouraged and to keep their heads up as we have a bright future in the sport.”The NACRA Sevens Championship also acted as a qualifier for the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup to be held in Moscow, Russia.
