Saltus Grammar School needed sudden-death overtime to seal a thrilling victory over Warwick Academy in the Boys A final of the Primary Schools Flag Rugby Tournament held at the National Sports Centre yesterday.
Both teams were undefeated entering the final, which ended 4-4 after regulation time. The overtime period was a seesaw battle with both teams gaining territorial advantage before Saltus crossed the tryline for victory.
Evan Washington and James Ives scored two tries each for the victors, with Brad Haveriku adding the other. Armand Foy and Kalae Crockwell each scored twice for Warwick Academy.
Saltus defeated Warwick Academy in the B final, albeit in a more convincing fashion. Saltus scored at will to win 5-2. Joshua lipschutz led the way with two tries, with further scores from Matthew Ingleman, Jonah Davidson and Noah Simons.
Warwick Academy were not to leave empty-handed, as they defeated Saltus 4-3 in a tightly contested girls’ final behind tries from Noah Powell, Addy Malpas, Amber Simons and Eilidh Redmond. Koa Goodchild scored twice for Saltus and Noah Autmenzguine had the other try.
The secondary schools event, which will feature flag and tackle rugby, will be held at the same venue tomorrow from noon.
