Women’s team run riot in Charlotte

All-conquering: the Dark n Stormys celebrate their triumph with the other teams at the Old Toe tournament

Bermuda women’s rugby team swept all before them at the inaugural Old Toe Rugby International 7s at the weekend.

The side conceded only two tries in four games in Charlotte, outscoring their opponents 120 points to 12 as they continue their preparations for the Nacra tournament in Cary, North Carolina, next month.

Bermuda included four rookies in their squad of 11 players and Andy Crichton, the head coach, praised his side for playing an “expansive game throughout.”

The Dark n Stormys opened with a 22-7 win over Kennesaw State University, followed it up with a 34-0 romp over University North Carolina, Charlotte and a 42-0 thumping of Elon University Women, before rounding out the tournament with a 22-5 defeat of Kennesaw State in the final.

“There was plenty of skill, pace and patience shown in all games and the squad grew noticeably in confidence during the tournament,” Crichton said.

The performance drew praise from Sean Field-Lament, Bermuda Rugby Football Union president, who pointed to the great strides the women’s team had made in a short period of time.

“I am obviously very proud of the women’s team, from a humble fledging grass roots start women’s contact rugby has blossomed,” Field-Lament said. “We are now playing the sport on the international stage. Coach Andy Crichton and his ladies have put in a tremendous amount of work.

“The effort is starting to yield results which bodes well for the future of the sport. In particular we are now looking to improve our World standings at the Nacra tournament in June.”

Next month’s tournament will also serve as an Olympic qualifier for the region, and Field-Lament encouraged anybody who was interested in representing their country on the world stage to contact the BRFU.

“There are plenty of opportunities to get fit, learn about the sport of rugby, embrace its positive values and ultimately represent Bermuda,” he said.
