Mariners continue dominant form
Mariners women’s team continued their superb start to the season with another dominating performance after beating Renegades 36-0 at North Field at the weekend.
Scoring tries for Mariners were Karly Alleyne, Apryl Jackson, Lysmeiri Santana-Suazo, Becky Galley and Amanda Swan. Gina Newson kicked three conversions.
Police rebounded from their heavy defeat to Mariners last weekend with an eight-try extravaganza against a tough Teachers side, winning 34-12.
Scoring for Police were Estienne Coetzee, with a pair, Jess Wagner, Fiona Donaldson, Olivia Smart and Meagan Jackson.
Kicking conversations were Fiona Donaldson and Mika Tomita.
Diving in for Teachers’ tries were Cherish Woodley and Najee Pitt-Clarke. Helen McHugh scored a conversion.
In the men’s division, Teachers beat Police 31-24. Poor tackling and tactical naivety proved to be Police’s undoing.
Corey Boyce, with a brace, Anthony Cupidore, Steve Wallace and Aldo Campbell scored tries for Teachers. George Peet, kicked two conversions, and David Porter kicked one.
Police’s scorers were Darren Richardson, with two, Dylan Marshall and Peter Lewington. Dan Cole kicked a pair of conversions.
In the second game of the day, Mariners suffered a 41-19 loss to Renegades.
Mariners kept the game competitive until the final quarter.
Renegades, the league champions, eventually broke down Mariners resilience and scored 31 second-half points.
David Rorke scored two tries for Mariners, with Kayote Wainwright-Basden adding another. Paul Kelly kicked a pair of conversions.
Also at the weekend, a veteran Police side took on a New York Police Department touring team.
In a see-saw match NYPD took advantage of a calamitous error to score early. Police responded with a great individual effort by Mike Kane.
The game went back and forth with NYPD edging into a 30-22 lead. In the final five minutes. Police fought valiantly and clawed it back to 30-29, but in the end they came up short in a highly entertaining game.
