Jamin Hodgkins on verge of professional rugby career
Jamin Hodgkins has enjoyed an encouraging start with Bridgend Ravens as he continues working towards his ambition of becoming a professional rugby career.
The former Bermuda Under-19 fly half, has stepped up a tier to the Welsh Premier Division after signing for the Ravens from Glamorgan Wanderers at the beginning of January.
Since then, the former Warwick Academy student has begun to contribute to his new side, including kicking 12 points in a 15-13 victory over Pontypridd.
Having started to enjoy a starting role for Ravens, who are a feeder club to professional side Ospreys, Hodgkins is excited by the prospect of further development and continuing his upward trajectory in the sport.
“I got a call over Christmas from the club to see if I would be interested in joining them and I was really excited to,” said Hodgkins. “It was an amazing opportunity to move up to the league above.
“It’s the league below the top tier, but the level is very close to professional. It’s a very high level of competition and a lot quicker and more physical than what I was playing before. Any small mistake is capitalised on and that’s been great to be involved in games.
“It’s pleasing to have already made an impact to the team. I will always back my kicking and be able to help keep the scoreboard ticking over.
“I’ve been kicking well and I know how crucial a job it can be in rugby. It’s an important part of the game and being consistent can come in really handy.
“It’s exciting to be playing at a good level and knowing that if I can impress there is a chance to move up again and keep progressing.
“That would be another big step up from here, but I’m fully committed to reaching the professional leagues because that’s a dream of mine.
“However, I’m not thinking that far ahead just yet. I just want to keep starting matches for Bridgend and see where that takes me.”
As well as making an impact domestically, Hodgkins has also set his sights on making a breakthrough on the international stage.
After not earning a cap when part of a provisional Canada squad for the La Vila International Rugby Cup in Villajoyosa, Spain in October, he remains determined to make his maiden appearance for the men’s national side, with a burning desire to ultimately feature at the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
“My goal is to really push on with the international scene,” Hodgkins said.
“I haven’t been fully capped yet and so my initial goal is to do that and then the ultimate dream would be to feature at the next World Cup in Australia.”
