Bermuda Police Rugby Club teams endured a mixed bag of results in the Duckett Memorial at Police Field on Saturday.

The women’s team won 14-7 against Rest, while the men fell 49-22 to the Bermuda Rugby Football Union President’s XV.

Jess Wagner scored a try and two conversions for the Police women, with Muireann Toomes chipping in with a five-pointer for the victors. Jessica Cassidy contributed a try and a conversion for the vanquished side.

Ciara Izzie, the Police women’s captain, praised her team’s fighting spirit for bouncing back after conceding first.

“It was a great team effort, we are thrilled with the result,” she said.

“We were the first to concede, but our defence really stepped up in the second half, and that made all the difference.

“The energy and communication from the players was really amazing.

“It was really great to come away with the win. The opposition team was amazing and we really enjoyed the positive energy on the field.”

Hadleigh Tucker contributed three tries and six conversions for the BRFU President’s XV, Ja’Kee Simons scored two tries, Kabir Dill grabbed one and there was a converted try by D’Zuri Gill.

For the Police side, their points came off tries by Jake Field, Conor Ward, and Tawanda Chidzawo, as well as a conversion by Jason Chlup.

Bill McNiven, the men’s winning captain, commended the younger players from both sides for a brilliant display.

“The game was played in a great spirit,” the 62-year-old said. It was really enjoyable and it was nice to see the youngsters from both teams doing their thing.

“They played some flowing rugby and it was great to be a part of this fixture.

“I played this game a number of times when I was younger. My father was actually a policeman and I remember the night the tragedy happened [George Duckett assassination], so it’s significant to me that this game continues.”
