Teachers Rugby Football Club made sure they ended the season on a high note when they clinched the Scully Cup on Friday.

Competing in a round-robin format under the lights on North Field, National Sports Centre, Jonathan Lightbourne’s women’s side started off with a 0-0 draw with Renegades, but A 17-5 triumph over Police ensured that Heidi Groves and her team-mates atoned for losing out on the league title.

Lysmeiri Santana scored two tries and a conversion for Teachers, with one try coming from Camille Chin-Gurret. Police got their try from Akila Craig.

Groves was determined that her side would pick up the win over Police, the league champions.

“After finishing second in the league by just a one-point difference, the Teachers women were determined to secure one last piece of silverware before the season ended,” Groves said.

“Having already claimed victory in the Mad Hatters round-robin tournament at the start of the season, we knew we had the talent and resilience to win again.

“The competition was fierce, with Teachers drawing against Renegades and defeating Police by a two-try margin. In the end, Teachers triumphed on points difference, and we are thrilled to reclaim the Scully Cup, marking our first win since the 2015-2016 season.”

Ciara Izzie, the Police captain, was delighted by the progress made by her team’s newcomers.

“The matches were tough in terms of fitness,” she said. “We didn’t have many substitutes, but the game play showed how much all our rookies have gotten over the season.

“The other teams definitely showed up, and hats off to Teachers who deserved the cup. It was a really good atmosphere on the pitch and although we didn’t get the silverware, we all had lots of fun, which is the most important thing.”

Meanwhile, the domestic rugby season concludes next Friday when the men’s teams compete in the Nicol Shield on North Field.
