Khari Sharrieff grabbed his slice of glory on Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby day by winning the Heritage Day Junior Classic.

Sharrieff, aged 15, crossed the finish line in 11min 10sec, to come out top of the 39 runners. Cameron Adkins finished runner-up in 11:17, the same time as third-placed Gianluca Bortoli. Tajahri Rogers finished fourth.

Part of the leading pack from the start of the 3.2-kilometre race, Sharieff was pleased to win after recovering from injury and did not take part in the event last year.

“I feel great,” Sharrieff said. “It’s the first time I am running in a couple of years as I just came off an injury. The race was actually not as bad as I thought it would be. I Finished strong, great competition.”

After starting to compete at a young age, Sharrieff was running in the Heritage Day Classic for the fifth time and had put in plenty of hard work.

“My coach actually had me running hard, so I would have run an hour on Sunday and Tuesday or Wednesday, I would have run another hour so I was really prepared.’’

Like Sharrieff, fourth-placed finisher Rogers has also been battling injury in the build-up to the event.

“I just came off an injury,” Rogers said. “I had a sore muscle that was a pain but other than that I felt all right. I made sure I had proper sleep, made sure I was hydrated and when I got out there, it was just me and the race, me versus the clock.”.

Ten-year old Naomi MacGuinness was the first of the 17 girls to cross the finish line, finishing in 12:40, which was good enough for tenth overall. Jaeda Grant finished second in 12:59 with Zaya Zuill third in 14:03.
