Junior Dash Series resumes at Flora Duffy Stadium on Friday
Some of the island’s brightest future prospects will get another opportunity to showcase their budding talents when the 2023 Dash Series resumes at Flora Duffy Stadium on Friday.
The popular Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club Juniors event will again feature athletes aged 4 to 11 competing over a variety of distances.
Runners aged 4 and 5 will run one lap, six and seven-year-olds two laps, eight to nine-year-olds three laps and ten and 11-year-olds will compete on a course of a mile, with the top three runners in each category earning prizes and medals to be awarded to all participants.
“This is the second race in MAAC Juniors’ prestigious Dash Series and we are hoping to have as many children take part,” Rose-Anna Hoey, the co-race director, told The Royal Gazette.
“This will be an opportunity for all young athletes of all abilities to challenge themselves to a personal best over their distance and see how their times compared to their race in Dash at Dark in April.
“We look forward to see how the children push and drive themselves and most importantly have fun!”
The 2023 season kicked off in April with the Dash at Dark for Eoghan held in honour of teenage cancer victim Eoghan Homan.
The late Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club runner and Somersfield Academy student died aged 16 in February at Boston Children’s Hospital following a 14-month battle against a rare and aggressive paediatric cancer, known as Ewing’s sarcoma, which affects just two children in a million.
“Eoghan was a dedicated MAAC Junior and Developing National Athlete,” Hoey, the three-times Bermuda Half Marathon women’s champion, said.
“He was a national champion and a much treasured and admired member of our club who truly felt the joy of running.”
Hundreds of youngsters participated in the event which also helped raise money for cancer charity Pals.
Friday’s Dash at Dusk begins at 6:30pm with registration available on racedayworld.com.
