Flora Duffy on hand to present prizes at Iron Kids triathlon
Bermuda’s Olympic champion Dame Flora Duffy was on hand at Clearwater Beach on Saturday to cast her eye over the future of her sport.
Duffy, who has yet to compete this year as a result of a troublesome injury, was a keen spectator of the Clarien Iron Kids triathlon, which took place as scheduled just two days after Hurricane Lee had brushed past the island.
More than 70 budding triathletes aged 15 and under took part with top honours in the 11 to 15 category (racing bike) going to Jackson Langley and Madison Schindel, who both picked up $1,000 for claiming overall success.
Langley, who recently picked up a gold medal at the Carifta Triathlon Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, finished in 21min 58sec, nearly two minutes in front of his nearest rival Noah Maranzana, with Braxton Cooze finishing third. Schindel crossed the line in 27:07, ahead of Sofia Leclerc and Kelise Wade.
In the 11 to 15 category (non-racing bike), Fletcher Logie beat Jacob Goodwin and Sohan Dhesi.
Youngster Naomi MacGuinness continues to catch the eye in whatever discipline she turns to, producing a remarkable performance to win the 7 to 10 (racing bike category).
MacGuinness, 10, was not only the first girl to cross the line in 14:12 but also beat all of the boys by more than a minute to become the overall winner. Owen Fosker and Jack Fullerton finished second and third respectively, with Iris Duda and Romy Drea the next girls home.
The 7 to 10 (non-racing bike) category was the most hotly contested with 31 entrants, and it was Colin Morgan, who led the field home with 13 seconds to spare over Austen Carr and Calvin Haldeman finishing third.
Bethany Davidge won the girls’ event and also finished fourth overall, with Violet Rossiter and Daisy Cooper finishing second and third
