Erica Hawley finishes sixth in dramatic World Cup triathlon in Chile
Erica Hawley continued her superb form by finishing sixth in a highly dramatic World Triathlon Cup race in Vina del Mar, Chile.
Fresh from producing the best performance of her career to finish fourth at the Pan American Games this month, the Bermudian returned to the same venue and produced another impressive display.
Among a strong field Hawley completed the sprint distance, which consists of a 750-metre swim, 18.5km bike and 5km run, in a time of 58min 38sec, to cross the line in tenth place.
However, following the conclusion of the race, the standings were altered with initial race winner Katie Zaferes, runner-up Teresa Zimovjanova, fourth-placed Anna Godoy Contreras and Mathilde Gaultier, who finished fifth, being disqualified for taking the wrong turn on the run course.
As a result, victory was awarded to Gwen Jorgensen, with Gina Sereno and Vicky Holland, sixth and seventh originally, promoted into silver and bronze medals.
Italy’s Angelica Prestia ended in fourth position with Djenyfer Arnold closing out the top five and Hawley moving up from tenth to sixth place.
In a far more straightforward elite men’s race, Hawley’s compatriot Tyler Smith battled his way to a highly respectable 21st place.
Smith, who finished seventh at the Pan Am Games, crossed the line in 51:56, slightly more than a minute adrift of Brazil’s Manoel Messias, who won in 50:48.
He pipped compatriot Miguel Hidalgo (50:52) in a sprint finish to claim gold, with Mexico’s Aram Michell Peñaflor Moysen (50:59) rounding out the podium.
