Christine Dailey is going out to defend her title in the PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run tomorrow at the Camden Grounds of the Botanical Gardens in Paget.

After years of running in the biggest female-only race in Bermuda, Dailey produced a dominant display to cross the line in a winning time of 19min 30sec.

The 37-year-old has been easing her way back into training since she ran in last month’s Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon in Canada, where she had a time of 1hr 21min 35sec.

“I’m going for another win on Sunday,” Dailey said. “I’ve been taking it easy since Toronto, so I’m not sure what to expect but I’m really looking forward to the race.”

The mother of two has had her moments in the race in the past, which includes running it while she was pregnant.

“I once ran it six months’ pregnant while pushing my one-year-old in the stroller, and that was the best race,’’ she said.

Dailey should face strong competition from Gayle Lindsay, as the two have engaged in battles on the road running scene over the years.

The two experienced runners will not have it easy, with a number of up-and-coming athletes registered for the 5K.

Naomi MacGuinness has a great chance to showcase her running talent against the seniors. Madison Schindel, fresh from competing in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Cross Country Championships in Canada, will look to also push the seasoned runners all the way.

Sofia Leclerc, the Dzurus twins, Aunika and Freja, Brooklyn Myers, Cristina Abend, Scarlett Spurling, Isla Cooze and Freya Lau are the other youngsters to watch out for.

The event, which aims to support “Women helping Women” charities on island, has this year selected the Women's Resource Centre and Reading Clinic’s Core Reading Programme.

Since 1998 the race has raised close to $500,000 for female-related causes in Bermuda. These include programmes to confront physical abuse, support rape victims, reduce poverty, educate teenagers, combat breast cancer, and fund equipment and initiatives supporting the treatment of women’s health.
