Runners invited to take part in Butterfield Mile trials
Trials for the 2025 Butterfield Mile will take place on Friday, December 13, at Flora Duffy Stadium at 6pm.
The top 25 finishers to complete the race in under eight minutes will be invited to compete in the Butterfield Mile Invitational Races, scheduled for Friday, January 17, the opening night of the 2025 Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
Trials will be held for children aged 10 and under, 11 to 13 and 14 to 17 with adult age groups set at 18 to 39, 40 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and older. Interested parties can sign up to the event here.
Freddie Evans, the race director and president of Bermuda National Athletics Association, is hoping for another successful night of trials.
“The Butterfield Mile provides a great opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talents,” Evans said.
“Last year, we saw records fall, and I am confident we will see more records broken in 2025. We have seen dynamic performances during the cross-country season, and we are excitedly looking forward to seeing potential record-breaking performances in the Butterfield Mile.
“If you can run a sub-eight-minute mile, we encourage you to come out to the trials and give it your best shot.”
A new mascot race has been introduced to the event for the first time, with lead sponsor Butterfield Bank providing one of the entrants.
“Butterfield is again proud to serve as the lead sponsor of the iconic Front Street Mile, one of the highlights of the local racing calendar,” a spokesperson for the bank said.
“This exciting event unites a community of junior, amateur, and elite athletes, together with their supporters, for a friendly evening of competition and celebration.
“We are delighted that our very own Vern will be running in this year’s new Mascot Race. Vern invites and encourages mascots from other companies, schools, and organisations to accept the challenge by reaching out to CBTC Race Director Heather Cooper at heather.trianglechallenge@outlook.com before Friday December 20.”
The 2025 Triangle Challenge is an international three-day running event that starts on Friday, January 17, with the Butterfield Mile.
It continues on January 18 with the BF&M 10k & 5k events, and culminates on Sunday, January 19, with the PwC Bermuda Marathon, Bermuda Half Marathon, and Bermuda Half Marathon Relay.
Runners also have the option of running the Full Triangle Challenge or the Half Triangle Challenge, which sees participants complete three races in three days: the mile on Friday, the 10k on Saturday, and either the full marathon or half marathon on Sunday.
