Tyler Smith has surgery on wrist injury
Olympian Tyler Smith has undergone surgery on a persistent wrist injury as he attempts to resume his triathlon career in 2025.
Smith travelled to Boston for an operation this week and is hoping the procedure will end a frustrating few months.
“The surgery is in Boston and it’s only minor,” Smith said.
“It’s to take out a piece of bone that was broken and repair the tendon that has been affected by it, so it’s probably one of these surgeries that it takes only six weeks before I’m back in the water and training, so it’s relatively minor.
“It’s been a frustrating three or four months for me just trying to manage injuries and get the treatment that I need to get back to doing triathlon racing.
“The cycling races I’ve done, such as the Presidents Cup and the Caribbean Championships, have been a good outlet for me to have some focus and have something to train towards and just express a little frustration.”
Smith made no secret of his disappointment with his Olympics performance, but 2025 is shaping up to be a huge year for his career as he moves to Spain to train with new partners.
“I’ve been really fortunate to join a new training group based in Spain,” Smith said.
“So as soon as I’m healthy the goal is to get over there and honestly it’s one of the best training groups in the world, so it’s a real opportunity for me and it’s given me a big boost of confidence that they have opened their doors to me and allowed me to join them.
“It’s also given me a lot of motivation to get healthy and get myself in a position to get over there.”
Erica Hawley is itching to get back into competition, with her Olympic experience in late July the last time she tasted action at the elite level.
“I haven’t raced since Paris and that’s the longest I’ve gone without racing,” Hawley said.
“I’m so ready to get back into it and I haven’t quite decided whether the comeback will be in Abu Dhabi or Napier. One is a WTS and one is a World Cup.
“After Paris, I took two months completely off and I hadn’t done that since Covid, so it’s taken a lot of time to get back into shape.
“I am trying to race a little more on the WTS circuit. I actually had only raced the girls who were in the Olympics in a handful of races so I feel that’s probably the next step, but since I have taken so much time off I’m going to start with some World Cups and see where I’m at. I definitely want to do the World Championships, which are in Australia in October, so that’s the big goal.”
Six months after competing on one of the biggest stages in sport, Hawley has had time to reflect on the changes in her life since she became an Olympian.
“I really thought that things might change after going to the Olympics but nothing really does,” Hawley said.
“It’s nice coming back because I think everyone here does recognise that and knows what it takes to get there and that’s really special. When I’m in Colorado, I’m just another person and I like flying under the radar, but it’s still special to come home as it means a lot more here.”
