Thunderstorms contribute to low turnout for David Saul Memorial 5K
You could not have got more different conditions for the two running events in Bermuda this weekend.
While Flora Duffy Stadium on Saturday afternoon was bathed in sunshine for the Skyport Magic Mile, runners in the David Saul Memorial Fidelity 5K had to deal with heavy rain and thunderstorms as they embarked on their Sunday morning workout.
Given the inclement conditions it was perhaps no surprise that turnout was significantly down this year, with only 120 runners competing in the main event, down from 222 last year.
Those figures were also replicated in the Competitive Walk and Junior Race, with only nine youngsters taking part in the 1.8K run, compared with 42 in 2024, that field possibly not helped by the Magic Mile taking place less than 24 hours earlier.
But no matter how many runners there are, there is still a race to be won and it was David Lunn and Teresa Ruiz who were victorious in the men’s and women’s contests.
Lunn crossed the line first in 17min 25sec to claim the win, with road race regulars Philip Woollins (17:41.53) and Tim Price (17:54.41) finishing second and third respectively on Crow Lane.
Ruiz stopped the clock in 19:17.84, which was good enough for fifth overall. Kristen Robinson finished second in 20:03.26, with Rose-Anna Hoey third in 20:36.71.
After finishing second in his age group in the Magic Mile a day earlier, Heath Kemp won the junior race in 7:20.49 ahead of Freddie Webster (7:36.13) and Isaac Metschnabel (7:44.85). Vivienne Fox, who won the 7-year-old girls race at the Magic Mile, was the sole female runner in the race and finished in 8:06.88, enough to claim sixth place overall.
The competitive walk was won by Samuel Booth in 32:22.16, with Nancy Andrews-Sousa the first woman to finish in 36:05.86
