Walker gets seventh after impressive performance

Bermuda's Blythe Walker ended his wonderful Gold Cup run with a seventh place finish over the weekend.

Walker and his team of fellow Bermudians – Adam Barboza, Somers Kempe and Will Thompson – took home $2,500 in prizemoney with the knowledge that they knocked out some of the world's top international sailors in the process.

When the round-robin racing began last Tuesday, 24 teams were vying for the top eight spots and Walker found himself in that elite group going into Saturday's final races of the quarter-finals.

He came up against Eric Monnin of Switzerland who beat him 3-1. But because he was still in the top eight, he then faced off against Torvar Mirsky in a single race that would determine his position.

Walker beat the young Australian to take seventh overall.

"It is great to ultimately finish on a high note against one of the great new talents from Australia," Walker said. "We have been working hard and this overall finish signified a lot to me. It is great that we had the chance to get an entry into this event and we are pleased that we could show some quality racing."

As Walker noted, one of the golden rules of match racing is to cover your opponent at all times, but in Hamilton Harbour the shifty winds tempt sailors to ignore that rule and go for the breeze.

"We had been playing the shifts a lot this week but felt we should have covered more during the final races," Walker said.

"In a way, that was our downfall because we covered Monnin but lost out big on a nice wind shift. Overall the team sailed really well and as the only Bermudian team it has been great to see all the support from the spectators who came down to watch."
