Walker claims Championship title

Blythe Walker skippered his crew to four victories to win the Bermuda National Match Racing Championships in Hamilton Harbour on Saturday.

The former Olympian beat off a spirited challenge from promising teenager Lance Fraser who came second ahead of established sailors Paula Lewin Crews, Jordy Walker and fellow youngster Ben Nicholls.

Fraser is considered a rising star of Bermuda sailing, and put in an impressive performance to finish second with a young crew in the J24 competition at Race Week in April.

Walker praised Fraser's showing in tricky conditions and has encouraged more young sailors to compete in local Match Racing.

"Lance did an excellent job and it's great to attract some new blood to Match Racing," he said.

"His performance showed he has a lot of potential and it would be great if more youngsters could follow him.

"There's a big difference from coming up from J-24s to International One Design (IOD) boats and he did a really good well."

Walker and Crews had already been invited to sail for the King Edward VII Gold Cup trophy in the Argo Group regatta this year.

And Walker hopes for a few more races to warm-up for the prestigious event.

"A few regattas didn't come through so it was our first Match Race of the year and it proved to be a good warm-up for the team," he said.

"The racing was pretty tough and it was a challenge as there were shifty winds, but we won all of our starts.

"Now the crew will be looking towards preparing for the Gold Cup, for which we already received an invite for.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get a few more practice races with Paula (Lewin Crews) in before.
