Bermuda to Newport record holder Green dies, aged 75
Legendary yachtsman Marvin Green who set a course record in the Newport to Bermuda Race has died of heart failure.The former Tucker’s Town resident passed away last month in Naples, Florida. He was aged 75.American Green, a former member of the Mid-Ocean Club and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, was most notable for his accomplishments on his 81 foot maxi yacht Nirvana.The boat set a new record for the Newport to Bermuda race in 1982, breaking the record by more than five-and-a-half hours in a time of two days, 14 hours, 29 minutes and 16 seconds. The record stood as the fastest elapsed time for 14 years.An avid supporter of the Bermuda Maritime Museum where he donated a model of Nirvana to commemorate his record-breaking win, Green also served on the board of the Bermuda Biological Station (now BIOS).Under Green’s command, Nirvana went on to break the Fastnet Race record in 1985 by more than 12 and-a-half hours. This record also –remained unbroken for –14 years.During Green’s tenure, Nirvana travelled to places other US flagged vessels would not get permission to visit, including mainland China and Cuba.Kings, Princes, Princesses, Knights, Senators, Congressmen, actors and actresses had the privilege of sailing on Nirvana. She still participates in offshore races today under new ownership.When George Coumantaros’ yacht Boomerang toppled Nirvana’s Newport to Bermuda record in 1996, Green was the first to congratulate Coumantaros and his crew, both personally and publicly.Educated at St.Luke’s in New Canaan, Connecticut, and Bowdoin College, in Maine, where he served as president of the Board of Overseers, Green was the Commodore of the Stamford Yacht Club and was an active member of the New York Yacht Club (NYYC).An international business man, he was also the chairman of the board of Reeves A/V Systems, Inc. and MSW Travel Group, Inc, as well as the founder and chairman of the investment firm Glendower Ltd.Green is survived by his children, Marvin H. Green III, Melissa Green, Alexandra Walter, Allegra Green and his granddaughters BG, Lucy, Annabelle and Margaux.A memorial service will be held at the NYYC on April 8.
