Simmons set to join Bromley FC
Devonshire Cougars winger Lejuan Simmons is set to join English non-league side Bromley FC after impressing their academy coaches. The move will see him train full-time while continuing his academic studies in the same two-year programme that fellow Bermudian Quadir Maynard began last year.Simmons, 17, spent this week on trial with the Conference South side after being recommended to them by former Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley.Broadley watched Simmons set up a goal in an academy league match on Wednesday and said Bromley youth coach Murray Jones had liked what he saw.“Lejuan’s done well. He hasn’t had the official letter yet but they’re going to take him, they’ve offered him a place verbally,” said Broadley, who worked alongside Jones at Crystal Palace’s youth academy.“I went to watch Lejuan play yesterday in a league match and he did well. He set up one of the goals and had a goal disallowed.“He came off after an hour when it was 1-1 and they ended up losing 3-1. I spoke to Murray and Bromley definitely like him and will take him.”Broadley also helped facilitate Maynard’s Bromley move and believes the Bermuda Under-20 international must strive for more consistency in his game.“I also went to watch Quadir play. He did okay but played in spurts,” said Broadley, who starts his new job as coach of US team Knoxville Force next week.“He needs to knuckle down because I think he’s got a bit too comfortable. He needs to realise that he has to start playing well every week.”Earlier this week Jones told The Royal Gazette that Maynard had not made as much progress as the coach had anticipated.“Quadir’s doing okay. He’s played some reserve games but probably hasn’t done as well as I’d thought he would have if I’m being honest. He’s making some in-roads and he’s definitely improved since he first came here. I’m looking for him to kick on a little bit further than he has done and maybe next season will be his year,” Jones said.Useful website: www.bromleyfc.net
