Murray Danforth on his Beneteau Figaro II, Flying Turtle, was the early leader after the Bermuda 1-2 Race got underway from Newport, Rhode Island. The fleet enjoyed a great start on Friday with a broad reach out to the open ocean in winds blowing 20 knots gusting to 25 knots. And with the fleet still on a reach to Bermuda, it was beginning to look as though it might be a quick race, according to Brian Oatley, Sailing Committee Chairman at the St. George’s Dinghy and Sports Club where the boats will moor after the 635 mile crossing. On Sunday evening, Flying Turtle was 264 miles NNW of Bermuda, cruising along at almost nine knots.Included in the 31-boat fleet are four Mini 6.5 boats, considered the smallest ocean racing yachts in the world, some measuring only 21 feet.
