RBYC to take on top yacht clubs in New York
Local sailors from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) will hit the waves off Newport, Rhode Island, to compete in the New York Yacht Club’s (NYYC) Invitational Cup.The race runs from September 10-17 and will see 22 yacht clubs from 16 nations and six different continents take part.Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR) and Yacht Club Capri (ITA) and the RBYC are among the favourites.The RBYC will tap into a reserve of local knowledge and experience in the Swan 42 boat when they compete in the regatta for the second time with Mark Watson at the helm. They placed sixth overall in 2009.Watson, owner of the Swan 42 Tiburon, has seen success sailing in Newport winning the Swan 42 National Championship in 2008.His RBYC team will be in action in Newport next month to compete at the nationals as part of their preparation for the Invitational Cup.The RBYC, which shares the same birth year as NYYC (1844), was established largely by officers of the British Army stationed in Bermuda.The roster of participating teams is: Yacht Club Argentino (ARG); Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (AUS); Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (BER); Royal Canadian Yacht Club (CAN); Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (CHN); Real Club Nautico de Barcelona (ESP); Nyländska Jaktklubben (FIN); Itchenor Sailing Club, Royal Ocean Racing Club and Royal Yacht Squadron (GBR); Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (GER); Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL); Yacht Club Capri and Yacht Club Punta Ala (ITA); Japan Sailing Federation (JPN); Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (NOR); Clube Naval de Cascais (POR); Royal Cape Yacht Club (RSA); and Eastern Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.); Annapolis Yacht Club (Annapolis, Maryland.); Newport Harbor Yacht Club (Newport Beach, California); and New York Yacht Club (Newport, Rhode Island) from the USA.
