Opti team beaten by Canada

Bermuda’s young sailors grabbed one win before exiting the team competition at the IODA North American Optimist Championships on Sunday.Friday and Saturday had seen Sam Stan lead the four-member Bermuda contingent in individual racing before the quartet came together for Sunday’s NAM team regatta.They enjoyed a good win against Mexico II in their first match in the double-elimination tournament but then lost to the USA II.That defeat sent them into a must-win showdown against Canada I who had lost to Canada II in their opening round match.Canada came out on top to eliminate Bermuda and Canada were then beaten by USA IUSA II defeated Puerto Rico to claim the Team Championship while in the separate Nations Cup, Argentina beat Uruguay to take top honours.The sailors had yesterday off and will resume individual racing today.Six races have already been held in the regatta which is being hosted by the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro, California just south of Los Angeles.Stan finished the opening day in 22nd place in the 187-strong fleet but dropped to 50th on the second day.Michael Barit is in 66th position, Rory Caslin 90th and Chase Cooper 179th.Some 187 sailors from 21 different countries are competing.The Bermuda team are coached by Zizi Staniul and are accompanied by country representative Sue Stan and Team Leader Somers Cooper.The boys spent four days training prior to the start of the event.
