Kirklands drop back at Worlds

Jesse and Zander Kirkland fell seven spots to 48th in the 49er class at the World Championships in Perth, Australia after two days of racing. The brothers, hoping to earn a spot in next year’s London Olympics, backed up their opening day performances with finishes of 24th, 30th, and 21st in the three races on day two, leaving them on 101 points. The pair had made a promising start to the regatta when they placed 14th and 15th in the opening two races. However, all their hard work was undone in the final race of the day which they failed to finish, leaving them in 41st position in the 65-boat fleet after the first day.The DNF has been thrown out as their worst finish but there is still a lot of work to be done if they are to overcome the deficit and place within the top 25.The gap is currently 38.4 points.Day one leaders Jonas Warrer and crew Soeren Hansen, of Denmark, are tied in second on 21 points with Americans Erick Storck and Trevor MoorePeter Anderson and Nicolai Thorsell, of Denmark, are the leaders, having claimed a fifth and a win, while their placing of 20th was their worst of the two days and will likely be thrown out.
