Kirklands boost medal hopes

Jesse and Zander Kirkland today enhanced their chances of medalling at the 49er World Championships in Croatia. The local sailors took another step towards advancing to tomorrow's medal race after producing another solid display of sailing against the world's elite off the shores of Sailing Club Uskok. The Kirklands got today's racing off to a flyer with a bullet (1st) and a third in the opening two races of the Gold fleet final. But they lost a bit of momentum in the day's final race after being disqualified for the second time this week under the black flag rule at the start. The local team, who qualified for the upcoming Olympics earlier this week, were hit with a 26 point penalty for going over the line early.Provisional results showed the Kirklands fourth overall after making their second drop. The top ten boats in the Gold fleet will contest tomorrow's medal race.
