British sailors fear losing home advantage
Britain’s Olympic team manager Stephen Park has defended the decision to stage next week’s Skandia Sail for Gold event at the same venue that will host Olympic sailing in July.British sailors fear that they may forfeit home advantage with the hosting of a World Cup regatta at the Olympic venue in Weymouth and Portland less than two months before the Games.Among those who have expressed concern over such is two-time Olympic champion Iain Percy.Park, however, doesn’t see any harm in staging the regatta at the Olympic venue which he said is already familiar to the sailors that will compete at July’s Games.“For years now international sailors have been able to access the Olympic marina,” he told British media.“A lot of the visiting teams have got their accommodation sorted in the area and have done for a couple of years.”Local 49er sailors Jesse and Zander Kirkland, who will be among the 700 participants competing at next week’s World Cup regatta in Weymouth and Portland, have spent more than a month in the region in recent years to get a better feel for the conditions.“We have spent a combined five weeks there in the past few years and can attest to it being pretty exposed and chilly over there,” Zander said.“No one know really knows what we will actually get because of the active weather pattern associated with the British Isles.“We want to be prepared for all conditions and since we have spent the majority of this past spring sailing in moderate, Mediterranean thermal breezes.”
