Strong start in Newport for skipper Sherwin

Skipper Stephen Sherwin's Nasty Medicine came second in its class both the New York Yacht Club’s (NYYC) ‘Round the Island Race’ and 158th Annual Regatta in Newport, Rhode Island at the weekend.

Skipper Stephen Sherwin and the crew of Nasty Medicine had an excellent weekend of racing in Newport, Rhode Island.Dr Sherwin’s Corby 41 placed second in its class in both the New York Yacht Club’s (NYYC) ‘Round the Island Race’ and 158th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex.Friday’s NYYC ‘Round the Island Race’ was held in shifty light winds under an overcast sky.The race committee delayed sending the boats out of the harbour for an hour in the hope that the wind would eventually fill in. Then when the fleet got to their circles in the sound there were further delays waiting for the wind to settle and fill. The race was finally sailed in gentle 5-7 knots of breeze which Dr Sherwin and crew seemed to thrive in.The local team then picked up where they had left off the day before on Saturday with another solid showing in the NYYC Annual Regatta. There were two races originally scheduled for the regatta but the race committee were only able to get one race completed due to fading wind. The NYYC’s Annual Regatta is the opening race of the three -race Onion Patch Series that also includes the Newport Bermuda Race and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) Anniversary Regatta.Nasty Medicine is currently second in the Onion Patch Series behind early pace setters Invictus which is helmed by American Ralph Duffett.Rounding off the top three is Jim Madden’s Swan 601, Stark Raving Mad.Also competing in Saturday’s NYYC Annual Regatta was Rives Potts’ Custom 48, Carina, which will defend her St David’s Lighthouse Division crown in this year’s Newport Bermuda Race. The Onion Patch Series has 23 entries and the RBYC Anniversary Regatta will comprise of those 23 plus six more.Entries for the RBYC Anniversary Regatta are still open to Bermuda boats and those competing in the Newport Bermuda Race.Nasty Medicine is among the four local entries competing in this year’s 635 mile Newport Bermuda Race which gets underway in Newport June 15 and concludes several days later in St David’s, Bermuda.Dr Sherwin’s Corby 41 is among the 96 boats registered in the St David’s Lighthouse Division.
