Bailey brothers in Comet Race glory
The sibling pair of Rudy and George Bailey won their second Long Distance Comet Race as a duo yesterday on board Temptation at the West End Sailboat Club. The victory marked the 11th win overall in the competition for the Somerset native Rudy, and brings him within four of St George’s Stevie Dickinson’s 15 overall wins.Second place went to 2010 champion Martin Finegan, while Stevie Dickinson, who led the early stages of the race, rounded out the top three.Rudy, a veteran of two decades of racing, was thrilled with the victory although he admitted the conditions were very testing and hailed the contribution of his crew member brother.“The conditions were crazy out there, there was a mix of everything and you needed a lot of patience and luck,” said Rudy Bailey. “It feels good just to finish the race not just win. I had my brother with me today so overall it is pleasing to have this moment. I enjoyed the race and I promised my brother that we would win this year after knowing we should have won last year had it not been for Mother Nature.“This is the second time we have done this, I won it four times with my daughter and she would have sailed today if I would have asked her.“Today is our day as a family so we will enjoy it together; I felt that I owed my brother this win.”Dickinson was in the lead for the better part of the race, however, a telling blow occurred on North Shore when the wily veteran made a crucial decision of which path he would take that led to him surrendering his lead. The 15-time winner briefly retired from racing in 2009 after winning back his title that he lost to Bailey in 2007.Jessie Kirkland, the 2008 winner, was not in yesterday’s starting fleet as he is preparing for the London OlympicsThe race was close throughout, with the top three being within 50 boat lengths of each other heading into the final mile, and there was a brief scare to the Bailey camp when he almost capsized as he crossed the finish line. However, the pair made sure no upset was to be on the cards.“Stevie has a few more wins than me but overall if we were to continue racing I feel I could catch up to his record and maybe overtake him,” added Bailey.
