Comet sailor Rudy Bailey has attributed his success at last weekend’s North American Comet Championship to “solid team chemistry” and a “dialled in” boat. The West End Sailboat Club stalwart won the regatta by a landslide after posting five bullets and two thirds sailing in moderate conditions.Bailey finished ten points clear of his nearest rival after discarding his worst score (third) to capture his fourth North American Comet Championship. The veteran sailor let his intentions be known from the outset as he reeled off three bullets and two thirds on the opening day of the regatta. He then wrapped up the title in emphatic fashion with two more bullets on the final day to leave the rest of the fleet toiling in his wake.Bailey said he was confident in his ability heading into the seven race series.“I was very confident and mentally prepared and the boat (Equaliser) I have up there sails extremely well,” he added. “I have been sailing well and I was determined to win.”Bailey said sailing with seasoned crew Jessica Gruskos was an added bonus.“Having Jessica with me was an extra boost because she is a really good crew and she knows the conditions very well,” he said. “Having Jessica in the boat with all of her local knowledge gave me peace of mind and I knew we could do well.“We did miracles and there were times we started dead last and sailed through 90 percent of the fleet before the first mark. We were like we were on steroids.”While he fancied his chances of success as good, Bailey said winning five of the seven races sailed surpassed his expectations.“I did what I thought I could do... but I didn’t think I would win five races,” he added. “The conditions were mostly light and moderate but I have an ability to make a boat do things it may not think it can do.“The boat was dialled in, I was mentally ready and I just did what I intended to do up there.”In the lead up to last week’s North American Comet Championship on the US East Coast Bailey captured his 11th Long Distance Comet Race title on local surf. The veteran sailor now plans to team up again with American Gruskos for the Comet International Championship to be held in Cambridge, Maryland in August.“I’m just waiting on a call from Jessica to see whether or not she can sail with me in August,” Bailey said. “The Comet International Championship is the regatta that earns bragging rights for the year and everyone wants to get their hands on that massive trophy.”
