Patton makes strong start in Italy

Young Bermuda sailor Campbell sits in 72nd position out 158 competitors at the IODA European Championships in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy.Patton, the only Bermudian competing, made an impressive start to the regatta recording finishes coming 43nd, 5th, 18th and 33rd in his first four races.The 11-year-old son of Bermuda Sailing Association president, Tim Patton, will continue racing today, day three of the regatta.Boys and girls are sailing in separate divisions at the event, where light winds and warm temperatures have hampered the progress of the racing schedule.Lignano Sabbiadoro is a village in the Fruili-Venizia Giulia region in north-eastern Italy and is one of the main summer resorts on the Adriatic Sea coast.Patton was able to join forces with the British Optimist Team, also competing in the regatta, for coaching prior to the event.The IODA European Championship’s Opening Ceremony took place on Sunday, with sailors parading along the streets of Lignano.
