Siese up against junior elite
Bermuda’s Owen Siese will be among the 255 sailors from 63 countries competing at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships beginning today in Dublin Bay, Ireland. The promising Sandys Boat Club sailor is taking part in the single-handed Laser Radial with 58 other top juniors. The championship, to be held from July 14-21, is regarded as the premier regatta on the annual youth sailing calendar.Siese qualified at last December’s Miami Orange Bowl regatta. He is the sole Bermudian competing in Ireland where he will come up against past Optimist rivals Just VanAanholt (Netherlands Antilles), Juanky Perdomo (Puerto Rico), Andrew McKenzie (New Zealand) and Mathias Robertson (Chile) to name a few.Bermuda Sailing Association (BSA) president Tim Patton said he expected Siese to perfrom well.“Owen is a naturally talented sailor,” the veteran Etchell sailor said.“He certainly would’ve benefited from some more local competition. But he’s been out practising and we expect he will do the Island proud in Ireland.”At age 16, Siese is the youngest skipper in the local fitted dinghy fleet. There are eight classes being contested in Ireland.Past ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships winners include multiple King Edward VII Gold Cup champions Russell Coutts (New Zealand) and Ben Ainslie (England).
