Teenager Wollmann wins in Vancouver

Mikey Wollman won last week’s Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships in Vancouver

Sailing siblings Mikey and Ceci Wollmann extended their rich vein of form on the International stage at last week’s Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships in Vancouver.Twelve-year-old sailor Mikey claimed overall honours after toppling defending champion Justin Vittecoq while 14-year-old sister Ceci finished third overall and was the top girl at the four-day regatta hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.Mikey managed good starts and sailed consistently to score eight top five finishes during the 12-race series. The Saltus Grammar School student led the regatta from the opening race but was forced to sweat it out towards the end as defending champion Vittecoq made a late surge. The promising sailor managed good boat speed around the racecourse in variable breezes and strong currents.Asked what was the key to his success, Mikey replied: “My strongest point was the first upwind and the start. I was also strong on the reaches and downwind.”Mikey noted that his strategy was to try and hang with the lead pack throughout the regatta.“Basically there were ten people that were good and you had to stick with or get in front of them,” he said. “I just stayed with them and I did okay.”This year marked the promising sailor’s fifth appearance at the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships and first win. Also impressing was Mikey’s sister Ceci who also attends Saltus Grammar School. The teenaged sailor reaped reward for sailing conservatively around the course in the shifty conditions.“I mostly tried playing it safe because it was really shifty and stuff,” she said. “I also had good starts which is always important.”Ceci’s strong showing bettered her previous best (sixth) at the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships.Earlier this month Ceci claimed overall honours at the CORK Optimist Regatta in Kingston, Ontario while brother Mikey finished a close second. Also competing at last week’s fleet racing event in Vancouver were Campbell Patton and George Buckley.Patton, son of Bermuda Sailing Association president Tim, placed 11th overall while Buckley finished 31st.Patton managed two top five finishes while Buckley managed one.
