Junior sailors get off to great start in Gold Cup
Optimist sailor Peter Dill currently leads the local fleet at the 2012 Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup after making a fabulous start to the regatta in the Great Sound yesterday.The promising sailor posted an impressive three top five finishes, that included a bullet, in the four races sailed so far.He sits in third overall in the 39-boat fleet heading into today’s racing.Dill thrived in yesterday’s 15-18 knot breezes that made for challenging conditions.“Breeze was what I favour and in the heavy breezes I feel pretty good,” he said.The local sailor led the fleet until the fourth race which saw him fall off the pace after crossing the line in 12th.“Peter Dill’s performance was nothing short of spectacular and it was a proud moment for Bermuda,” event chairman Somers Cooper said.Cooper’s son, Chase, is also in the hunt after getting the regatta off to a promising start.The younger Cooper is currently eighth with two top ten finishes, including a second, under his belt so far.Siblings Ceci and Mikey Wollmann sit in tenth and 11th .Other local sailors currently in the top 20 are Campbell Patton (14th), Benn Smith (17th) and Matilda Nicholls (20th).Argentina’s Thomas di Luciano is the current leader at the 2012 Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup.
