Taylor Canfield and his Chicago Match Race Center team-mates produced a stunning upset to win the 2012 Argo Group Gold Cup in Hamilton Harbour yesterday. The US Virgin Islands skipper bested Alpari World Match Racing Tour Card Holder and past Gold Cup winner Johnie Berntsson (Sweden) 3-0 in the final to capture a maiden Tour win.Canfield is a non-Tour card holder and is currently ranked 15th in the open ISAF rankings while Berntsson is ranked sixth in the world and competes full time on the Tour.Chicago Match Race Center were by far the better team throughout the regatta, losing only three matches en route to the title. And yesterday’s shutout win against the 2011 Swedish Sailor of the Year was another reminder just why.“This is by far the most prestigious event we’ve won and it’s nice to win in Bermuda, this is a great event” said Taylor, who previously sailed in the Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup. “This is our third year here and it’s pretty nice; great conditions and definitely a unique style of sailing in the IODs (International One Design classic racing sloop).“I was a bit nervous, but we didn’t have much to lose. We are a young team sailing against one of the better sailors in the world and we just had to give it our best effort and put it all on the line, and I think we managed to do that.”Canfield and his crew executed clean starts and did another excellent job picking the shifts and maintaining good boat speed around the racetrack in yesterday’s shifty conditions.“I think we were very strong tactically,” he added. “We were hitting every single shift.“Not only did we get every shift, we were very fast around the racecourse so that was definitely a help to go faster than your opponent which makes life a lot easier. All credit to my crew (Josh McCaffrey, Dan Morris and Mike Rehe) who did an incredible job getting me around the racecourse which allowed me to just focus on driving the boat fast.”Berntsson and Berntsson Sailing Team, who ousted top seed and past Gold Cup winner Ian Williams 3-0 in the semi-finals, took yesterday’s defeat all in stride.“I think we are quite happy with how we sailed but unfortunately we didn’t go all the way,” he said. “Sometimes you just need a piece of luck but we didn’t have that this time.“Taylor and his team were the strongest and we congratulate them.”Very little separated Berntsson and Taylor at the start line. However, Taylor held a much bigger edge finding the pressure and protecting leads.“We didn’t deliver the starts we needed to be ahead, I think we had equal starts which is sometimes good,” Berntsson said. “But as soon as he got ahead of us he didn’t open a gap for us to get back.“We sometimes gained on him but he never opened up so it was impossible to pass him.”Williams (England) and GAC Team Pindar finished third after beating Erik Monnin (Switzerland) and Swiss Match Race 2-1 in the Petite Final.“Third is a good result and another podium for us,” the reigning Tour champion said. “We have now done five podiums out of six World Tour regattas this year, so we just have to keep plugging away.”* Douglas Elmes won the Renaissance Re Junior Gold at the first attempt. The Irish Optimist sailor claimed top honours after finishing the regatta four points ahead of second-placed Tomas Di Luciano of Argentina.Switzerland’s Damian Suri rounded off the podium finishers.Chase Cooper earned the inaugural Dick Kempe Trophy as the top local performer. Cooper finished an impressive seventh overall.Siblings Ceci Wollmann (11th) and Mikey Wollman (15th) rounded off the top three finishers in the local fleet.
