Hurricane winds threaten Games sailing regatta

Hurricane Sandy threatens to wreak havoc on two major sailing regattas scheduled for the weekend. The Corporate Games regatta in Hamilton Harbour is due to start today while the 2012 IOD World Championship is scheduled to commence tomorrow in the Great Sound.Because winds associated with Hurricane Sandy are expected to blow near the maximum allowed (18 knots) for the 420 fleet participating in the Games, race officials will measure the wind speed to determine whether today’s start will go ahead as planned.“Obviously the primary focus is safety and we don’t want to wreck the boats either,” race chairman Neil Redburn said.“What we are going to do is go out on the water with the wind gauge and measure it in the harbour. And I’m hoping in the harbour, because of the buildings and the Island, it won’t be as breezy.“We want to have a fun day out. But if it’s (wind) honking we are going to call it off.”With winds expected to increase to 26 knots tomorrow, it remains doubtful that any racing will take place.“I’m almost certain Sunday will be canned,” Redburn said. There are 16 teams participating in the Games sailing regatta.Race officials are hoping to complete 12 races today before the fleet is divided into Gold and Silver fleets. In the event racing is held today but cancelled tomorrow the winning team will be determined by the outcome of the first day of competition.“If we can run the full 12 races tomorrow (today) we can produce a result out of that,” Redburn said.Among the top local sailors participating are Blythe Walker and Adam Barboza.Meanwhile, blustery conditions also threaten to postpone tomorrow’s start of the nine-race IOD World Championships.Race officials have already considered starting the regatta early next week, with as many as three races being held daily to make up for lost time.Tomorrow’s skippers meeting will go ahead as planned.
