Contest makes clean sweep

Contest III emerged as the top boat during today's fitted dinghy season opener in St George's Harbour.The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) boat made a clean sweep of victories in the three races sailed in 14-17 knot southeast breezes with teenage skipper Dimitri Stevens at the helm.The college student carved his name in local sailing history as the first black skipper to helm Contest III in the annual Heritage Day event hosted by St George's Dinghy and Sports Club.With all boats sporting their number three rigs, Contest III won the opening race by a comfortable margin to win the Heritage Trophy for a record 11th consecutive year and set the tone for the remainder of the day.Stevens and his fellow team-mates (Somers Kempe, Butch Agnew and Joe Gordon) also won the remaining races for the Anniversary Cup and Leon D Fox Cup convincingly.Contest III is the two-time defending Coronation Cup champions.Sandys Boat Club's Challenger, with teenager Owen Seise at the helm, managed two seconds while St George's Dinghy and Sports Club's Victory posted two thirds and a second on the day.Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club's (RHADC) Elizabeth, with Argo Group Gold Cup skipper Lance Fraser at the helm, had a best showing of the third in thefinal race.Elizabeth was forced to withdraw from the first race after colliding with the weather mark on the first windward beat and losing its rudder and sank on the first downwind run in the second race along with Victory helmed by Mark Soares.Elizabeth did not start the final race which saw Challenger sink on the first run to the leeward mark.The fitted dinghy is unique to Bermuda and has been in existence for more than a century. The first recorded race involving fitted dinghies was held on August 26, 1853 in St George's Harbour.For more pictures click here
