Cooper and Wollman lead the way for Bermuda
Chase Cooper and Ceci Wollmann top the local fleet at the halfway stage of the 2013 IODA North American Championship.After six races Cooper sits in sixth followed by Wollmann who is breathing closely down his neck in seventh.Wollmann is also currently second among the female field.Cooper sits on 31 points after discarding his worst showing to date (16th) and has so far posted an impressive four top ten finishes.Wollmann is two points adrift and has also managed four top ten showings which includes a bullet — Bermuda’s only one to date — which she achieved in the third race.Argentina’s Dante Cittadini (11pts) leads the 176-boat fleet by six points over nearest rival Shawn Harvey (17 pts) of USA. Harvey’s compatriot Ripley Shelley (19 pts) rounds off the top three at the halfway stage.Meanwhile, USA II and Singapore captured the first two titles up for grabs at this year’s North American Championship which is the largest one-design regatta ever held in local waters.The Americans beat US Virgin Island 3-2 to win the North American Team Racing Championship while Singapore defeated Argentina 2-0 to capture the Nations Cup trophy involving non-North American countries.The regatta, involving sailors from 19 nations, resumes with fleet racing in the Great Sound on Tuesday following Monday’s rest day.Bermuda last hosted the Optinam in 2002 which was won by local sailor and future Olympian Jessie Kirkland.
