Kempe and Wollmann start brightly in Miami

Sebastian Kempe sits in eighth place in the Optimist Green fleet after the first race day at the Orange Bowl Youth Regatta being held at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami.

Kempe, along with several of Bermuda’s promising sailors, is competing against a competitive international fleet over the next four days.

Following in the footsteps of Micah Raynor, who finished sixth overall in last year’s competition, Kempe had finishes of tenth, seventh and sixteenth in the opening three races. The young Bermudian is on 33 points, with Javier Garcon, the leader, having accrued only four points after two firsts and a second in the 60-boat fleet.

Christian Ebbin also had a good day on the water in the Green fleet, finishing with 25th, 34th and twelfth placings from the three races to sit in 24th overall.

Mikey Wollmann was equally impressive in the Pink flight of the Optimist RWB fleet. Wollmann was third in his final race after two ninth-place finishes and ranks fifth in his flight, good enough for fifteenth overall from 240 in the fleet. Next under the Bermuda flag was Tayte Stefaniuk, who is 43 overall and seventeenth among the Violet flight. Other locals in the field included Matilda Nicholls (68th), Joe Arrowsmith (81st), Felix Culter (83rd), Camille Chin-Gurret (130th), Alice Reeves (140th), Grace Reeves (142nd), Charis Todd (175th), Flo Nicholls (182nd) and Brandon Adams (183rd).

Chase Cooper is fourteenth in the Laser 4.7 class.
