Cameron Pimentel is threatening to run away with the International Race Week Championship Trophy.

The 23-year-old yesterday extended his lead in the Laser class taking part in the Bacardi Bermuda International Invitational Race Week after producing yet another phenomenal display in the Great Sound. Pimentel has won all six races so far and after one drop leads nearest rival and compatriot Malcolm Smith by 15 points heading into the business end of the regatta.

“I have had a good last couple of days and hopefully I can keep it going for the next two,” Pimental said. “There is a lot of racing to go still. But it was good start and a good way to get the regatta going, so I am pretty happy with it.”

Pimentel has managed to consistently sail the right angles around the racetrack in spite of the variable conditions that Mother Nature has thrown at the fleet.

“It got pretty breezy in the last race today [yesterday], so it got pretty exciting on the downwind and it was pretty tiring too. It was a bit of a workout but it was good.”

As for the steadily improving Smith, Pimentel said: “Malcolm is a great sailor so I am sure it will be tough. We will just have to race hard and see what happens.”

Slipping from second to third was Rajae Woods with seasoned campaigners Brett Wright and Sara Lane Adderley rounding off the top five in the Laser fleet.

Peter Wickwire, of Nova Scotia, has bolstered his chances of clinching the International One Design A series. The Nova Scotia J24 champion and Argo Group Gold Cup sailor leads Jan Petter Roed, of Norway, by 17 points with Dan Faria, of Newport, Rhode Island, a further three-points adrift in third. Faria is sharing the helm with Roy Weedon this year.

The battle for Race Week bragging rights in the Etchells has come down to the wire. Canadian John Hele holds a four-point advantage over Bermuda’s Tim Patton heading into the final two races, with Jason Owen, of Britain, a further four-points back in third.
