Bermuda’s sailors made considerable inroads at the International Optimist World Dinghy Championships in Argentina yesterday.

Making the biggest gain was George Buckley who climbed 20 places up the leaderboard from 45th to 25th after placing 27th in the only race contested in the Red Flight. Breaking into the top ten in the Red Flight was Adriana Penruddocke who climbed from fifteenth to eighth after crossing the line in seventh, the female sailor’s best finish of the Championship. Joe Arrowsmith, who is also competing in the Red Flight, also made positive strides after a fifteenth-place finish catapulted the sailor from 59th to 50th.

Surging ten spots from 42nd to 32nd in the Blue Flight was Paul Wollmann, who placed 20th in yesterday’s sole race. Tayte Stefaniuk climbed from 40th to 34th in the Yellow Flight after crossing the line in 26th. Switzerland’s Nicolas Rolaz maintained his comfortable lead in the Yellow Flight yesterday, while the lead in both the Blue and Red Flights changed hands.

The Netherland’s Stijn Paardekooper bumped Uruguay’s Santiago Rial out of top spot in the Blue Flight, with New Zealand’s Scott McKenzie replacing compatriot Sam Bacon at the top of the Red Flight.

The Championships are being hosted by Club Náutico San Isidro in San Isidro, which is a traditional sailing town north of Buenos Aires.

There are more than 200 sailors from 50 countries competing at the Championships, which are being held in Argentina for the first time.

The regatta concludes today.
