Red Bull hopefuls get shot at RC44s
Eight young Bermuda sailors will take to the water this weekend in the RC44 Championship Tour.
The group, all of whom are trying to make Bermuda’s Red Bull Youth America’s Cup team, will compete alongside 56 sailors in eight international teams.
One of the eight, Mustafa Ingham, has already been heavily involved in the build-up to the RCC44 event, working as part of the shore staff for Team Aqua.
Ingham hopes the experience and knowledge gained this week will help him make the final cut for Team Bermuda later this year.
The other seven involved are Peter Dill, Na’eem Griffith, Danny Pell, Greg Maybury, Kobe White and Denzel Simons.
Once the regatta is over, the eight will have a couple of weeks before a final training camp is held at the end of this month, with the Bermuda team expected to be announced shortly afterwards.
Meanwhile, registration for the event in June 2017, in the Great Sound, opened for applications according to a statement posted on the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup website.
“Six crews will compete through their affiliation with official America’s Cup teams, and up to ten additional teams will be selected by the event’s sport directors Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher,” the statement said.
“After the selection process, these young sailors will race in the qualifying series. As a result of this, the top eight teams will then take part in two days of fleet racing, which will be scheduled during the America’s Cup Finals in June 2017.”
