Team Aqua hold off charging Bronensec

Clean sweep: Team Aqua won the match racing and fleet racing titles

Team Aqua completed the sweep during yesterday’s final day of the RC44 Bermuda Cup in the Great Sound.

The British team wrapped up the match racing title on the opening day of the regatta and then came full circle after holding off a charging Bronensec Sailing Team to clinch the fleet racing title as well.

Team Aqua started the final day of the regatta with a four-point advantage over nearest rivals Team Cereef and did enough on the racecourse to pip Bronensec Sailing Team, the 2015 RC44 match racing champions, by two points to become the first winners of the RC44 Bermuda Cup.

“We’re really pleased with this week — the guys did really well,” Cameron Appleton, the Team Aqua tactician, said.

Bronensec Sailing Team coped best in the light breeze which rarely exceeded five knots, winning the last two races to finish on the front foot. But it still wasn’t enough for the Russian team to overhaul Team Aqua.

Michele Ivaldi, the Bronensec Sailing Team tactician, admitted that luck played a factor in team’s solid finish to the regatta.

“For sure in this kind of conditions some luck is involved, but we had good starts and we managed both times to get the first shift,” he said. “That together with good boat speed and good crew work.

“It wasn’t easy, but it was a good effort.”

Rounding off the podium in third was Team Nika, the 2015 RC44 fleet racing champions.

Saturday’s penultimate day of the regatta saw Bermuda Red Bull Youth America’s Cup hopefuls sail in the ninth man slot on board the one-design RC44 racing yacht.

“It was super intense and they were highly focused and very professional,” Mustafa Ingham, who sailed with Artemis Racing, said.

“I don’t know how they finished behind, because everything looked like it was very precise and they had it down to a tee.”

On the opening day of regatta Ingham, who plays football with Premier Division side Hamilton Parish, was on board Team Aqua when Chris Bake’s team locked up the match racing title.
