Optimist six take on best in the world
Six of the island’s best optimist sailors have flown to Ecuador to compete in the South American Championships.
The regatta in Salinas will pit Jordan Etemadi, Sebastian Kempe, Luke Madeiros, Rian McDonnell-Geraghty, Tayte Stefaniuk and Leyli Walker against the best optimist sailors from North and South America.
There are 160 sailors entered from 15 nations, with Stefaniuk Bermuda’s most experienced competitor, competing in his third South American Championships.
Although Stefaniuk will look to better his 28th place from last year, Kempe, McDonnell-Geraghty and Walker are all new to the regatta which is likely to take place in light winds.
Pablo Weber, the team’s coach, will accompany them to the March 17 to 26 event, with the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association and Digicel providing much-needed financial support.
“We all wish our sailors well in Ecuador,” Sean Ringsted, the BODA vice-president, said. “BODA is delighted to have such a talented team represent Bermuda. I know the team is looking forward to a competitive regatta and has been training hard under the guidance of coach Pablo [Weber].
“I’m confident that the experiences and success of the team will further inspire Bermuda’s optimist sailors to pursue their sailing dreams.”
